Seizure detection devices: Exploring caregivers’ needs and wishes

Abstract Introduction User preferences for seizure detection devices (SDDs) have been previously assessed using surveys and interviews, but these not addressed the latent needs wishes. Context mapping is an approach in which designers explore users’ dreams fears to anticipate potential future experiences optimize product design. Methods A generative group session was held context approach. Two types of nocturnal SDD users were included: three professional caregivers at a residential care facility two informal children with refractory epilepsy learning disabilities. Participants invited share their personal briefed make wishes explicit. The audiotaped transcribed analyzed together collected material inductive content analysis. qualitative data classified by coding content, grouping codes into categories themes, combining those general statements (abstraction). Results “Trust” emerged as most important theme, entangling various emotional practical factors that influence caregiver’s trust device. Caregivers expressed several could help gain SDD, including integration different modalities, insight on all parameters overnight, adjustment algorithm, recommendation neurologist, set-up period. Needs regarding alerting seemed differ between our study: preferred be alerted only potentially dangerous seizures, whereas emphasized urge every event, thus indicating need settings. Conclusion In this explorative study, we identified key elements implementation importance gaining possibility adjust settings caregivers.
